Overview
The Centre for Studies in Science Policy (CSSP) started functioning in 1970.  It was a pioneering effort since at that time, the `field of Science Policy Studies had yet to be established as an independent area of mainstream education anywhere in the world.  Over the last three dcades the Centre's students have produced several Ph.D. and M.Phil. dissertations.  The topics involved covered: science and technology policy issues relating to different sectors like agricultue, energy, health, communication and transportation.  Concurrently, some researach project undertaken by the faculty also received national recognition.
The broad objectives of the Centre are: to conduct teaching, research and training in the interdisciplinary field of S&T Policy Studies.  Such work is aimed at for the generation of empirical and theoretical knowledge leading to an enhanced understanding of the science-technology-society interaction: This includes the poliltical and economic environment as also the social, institutional and cultural factors that influence development and application of S&T.  The objectives would also include policy issues related to technological change and innovation and those pertaining to the formulation and implementation of both policies for S&T and S&T in public policy.
The specific objectives of the centre are :
* To enable students to move from disciplinary orientations to interdisciplinary research environment and impart holistic edication on Science and Technology and Society issues.
*To undertake research in areas of S&T policy making of national priority including the evaluation of conceptual and methodological frameworks and data bases for S&T policy making, planning and management.
* Teachning and research on regional e.g. SAARC and international relation in S&T to enhance national and regional capabilities for S&T policy making and implementation, will also be an important objective of the centre.
* To undertake consultancy assignment of S&T policy-related issues including subjects such as R&D Management, Technological Innovation Promotion, Role of Intellectual Property Rights for clients in both the public and private sectors, including government agencies, enterprises and international organizations.
